Early Stimulation in Spanish Water Dog Puppies

Our contact with the breed of Spanish water dog begins after having worked for years with German shepherds. The German race is subject to work tests such as RCI, SchH or BH to preserve their character as a working dog and breeding specimens must pass these tests to be able to breed by CEPPA Club.

When we started with the Spanish water dog the first thing we did was to study the bloodlines and breeders that were in Spain to choose our breeding base. We wanted healthy dogs with character to work. That was how we met Rafael Fernandez of the Anarres affix, his dogs and his way of working with them and raising them.

Anarres is one of the old bloodlines in the Spanish Water Dog and is based on the Voodoo Champion, an exceptional dog for the job that served his guide Rafael like no dog ever has. We loved to see them work in their home and we learned many lessons that we think is the person who knows this race in the world, Rafa.

One of the many lessons that we could receive from Rafa de Anarres was the treatment of the cubs from their birth so that they were then stable and working specimens: EARLY STIMULATION IN THE SPANISH WATER DOG.

Steps to follow

The steps to carry out EARLY STIMULATION in puppies of a litter must be done every day from day 5 of life to day 23. After this day 23 this method is concluded.

The US Army, in its canine training program, developed a method to improve the capacity of its dogs called “Bio Sensor”, later became known in the civil area as the “Super Dog” Program.

His studies demonstrated that early neurological stimulation exercises could have important and long-lasting effects, as well as that there are specific periods of time when such stimulation has optimal results.

1. Tactile stimulation.
Holding the puppy in one hand is gently stimulated between the toes of each of the legs using a swab. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

2. Hold your head up.
Using both hands, the puppy is kept perpendicular to the ground. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

3. Position the head down.
Holding the puppy firmly with both hands, it is turned so that the head faces the ground. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds

4. Supine position.
Holding the puppy so that its back rests on the palm of both hands. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

5. Thermal Stimulation.
A wet towel that has been previously cooled in the refrigerator is used for at least 5 minutes. Place the puppy on the towel, leaning on the legs. Movement should not be restricted. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

6. Stimulation of support and touch.
Place the puppy on a surface where its support is irregular (like a cardboard egg). This creates in the puppy a stress to be maintained and also to the touch by having his legs and body on a non-regular surface. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

7. Stimulation of smell
The puppy is placed in our lap so that it feels our heat and it exhales our breath directly in the muzzle. From this message he feels human touch and smell. Time: from 3 to 5 seconds.

These 7 exercises will provoke neurological stimulation, none of which occurs on its own during the first stage of the puppy’s life. Do not repeat them more than once a day and do not extend their duration more than the recommended time in each exercise. An over stimulation can bring adverse effects, as well as counterproductive.

These exercises will activate your organ system earlier than normal and, as a result, the dog’s overall ability will be increased so that differences in its later development will be appreciated.

After the 23rd day of life

Once finished the process of EARLY STIMULATION on the 23rd of life at UBBADAT we have developed an extension of the same protocol until the 60th day that is when the puppies leave our house with their new owners.

In this process of expansion, the puppies already eat moist feed and begin to play with each other. They move and start to be curious.

It is at this time, between the 23rd and the 60th, when our own protocol begins to work subjecting the puppies to a level of stress that is stronger each time so that they are able to withstand future changes in their life and can Better manage their evolution from puppy to young dog and then to adult.

A controlled daily stress favors that the puppy considerably lower his level of avoidance and fears to the unknown, knowing better control the situations.

We will not go into details of our process in this article but we can say that noises, changes in temperature, environments and handling are the keys to a process that is giving us a very good result since we started it and that offers us some security of That the puppies that leave with our UBBADAT Afix are prepared for the real world.
