Allergy to dogs

Hypoallergenic dog breeds are canine breeds said to be safer than other breeds for allergy sufferers, although allergists believe that “all safe breed theories are just wishful thinking,” according to a New York Times article.

Allergic symptoms related to dog exposure include asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and hives. In an attempt to reduce these symptoms, people with pet allergies who want to have a dog have sought out so-called hypoallergenic dog breeds to reduce or eliminate allergic symptoms.

Although there are no 100% hypoallergenic dog breeds, there are certain certain breeds of dogs that, due to their characteristics, do not cause allergic reactions to people with allergies to dogs. Although it all depends on each particular case, dogs that do not have or do not lose hair and / or do not produce dandruff are usually considered hypoallergenic dogs.

The main dog allergen, Can f 1, is responsible for allergies in most people who are allergic to dogs. Hypoallergenic dog breeds are believed to have a lower concentration of Can f 1. Therefore, these breeds cause fewer – or even no – allergic symptoms in people with allergies to dogs.

Some breeds of dogs that are considered hypoallergenic include the Spanish Water Dog, the Poodle, the Yorkshire Terrier, the Schnauzer, or the Maltese Bichon, among others. But there is no scientific evidence that these breeds actually produce lower amounts of Can f 1. This assumption is based simply on the fact that because these dog breeds do not shed their hair, they must be hypoallergenic.

The fact that a person suffers from an allergy to dogs does not mean that their body emits an immune response caused by the animal itself, but by a series of allergens that they produce. The main allergens produced by dogs are proteins that are usually found in the animal’s saliva, dander and the sebaceous glands (located in the dermis).

If the allergy you suffer is to the proteins of dandruff and your dog’s skin, you should know that there are a series of dogs called hypoallergenic because they produce a lower amount of dandruff and do not expel practically any hair, through which we also the allergens that cause the allergic reaction can arrive. Such is the case of the Spanish water dog.

On the other hand, if the allergen that triggers your body’s immune response is found in saliva, you should check with your doctor whether or not you can enjoy the company of a Spanish water dog depending on the degree of your allergy.

The Spanish water dog, hypoallergenic

The belief that some breeds of dogs are hypoallergenic is based on the idea that these animals secrete fewer irritating allergens than other breeds, although there is no serious scientific evidence to support this idea. The breeds that shed less hair are also believed to be hypoallergenic, since it is believed that dandruff and abrasions from the dog’s skin and its saliva adhere to the hair and are not released into the environment; but this has not been proven.

The Spanish water dog is one of the most suitable breeds for those with an allergy to dogs. However, it should be noted that the fact that they are hypoallergenic does not mean that they do not cause any allergic reaction, but rather that they produce a lower amount of allergens and, therefore, the allergy can tolerate them much better. Still, each person is different and it is not scientifically proven.

The Spanish water dog does not lose any hair since its coat is adapted to eliminate dandruff, its saliva is adhered by its fur so there is no need to worry about it. Their hair is woolly in consistency, does not shed from their skin, and therefore they do not shed allergens throughout the home.
